Ice rinks are poured and people are skating. They are always full of kids. They are playing snowballs, molding snowmen, sledding and skiing. Laughter and shouts of joy are everywhere.
And of course the New Year celebration and Christmas bustle.
With the coming the New Year and Christmas holidays, multicolored illumination is turned on everywhere - on the the central Christmas tree, on the windows of all the houses and shops. The real extravaganza begins!
It is a true joy and fun time. BUT...not for everyone. Here is Della. She is in a despair. It is one day before Christmas, and one dollar and 87 cents is all she has. We all know that Christmas is a time of gifts, but what one can buy for these money?! Nothing special! Della finds the same.
She is in love with Jim and it's mutual. He is something special for her, so the gift for him should be special too. "Something fine and rare and sterling - something just a little bit near to being worthy of the honour of being owned by Jim."
The solution to this problem comes by itself: she cluttered out of the door and down the stairs to the street. Finally, she stopped near "Mme Sofronie. Hair Goods of All Kinds". A moment, and she lost her treasure, the object of her pride.
But that was nothing, if compareit to her feeling of joy and happiness. She is proud of herself and the fact that now, finally, she will buy something truly special for the best man in the world.
"She was ransacking the stores for Jim's present. She found it at last. It surely had been made for Jim and no one else." Well, reading these lines I really can imagine Della, running from a one shop to another. I think, it's so in a feminine way. We, women, falling in love with someone, are capable for such acts, for which not all men are able! Just think! Give out your pride, a feature, given by a nature for a gift for man you love. It really deserves respect!
And what in return? Jim presents Della a set of combs, those that she liked from the first glance. And what then? And then an ecstatic scream of joy; and then, a quick feminine change to hysterical tears and wails. Della got something she wanted so long ago, but it has become unnecessary. ALAS! She no longer had wonderful hair that could be decorate by these beautiful combs.
Well, Della left with nothing, but what about a gift for Jim? Well... Having seen Della's gift Jim did not know how to react to it. Not because he did not like Dell's gift, no it was a platinum fob chain simple and chaste in design. As it turned out, both were unnecessary gifts.
The moral is: “Unconditional love is the greatest gift we can ever give.”

Atmosphere you've created from the very beginning - description of the beauty of snow - is so striking that I immediately imagined winter and New Year)
